The Ventura County Fusion opens a two-game road trip Wednesday night against Davis Legacy SC at Davis Legacy Stadium. Davis Legacy sit one spot below the Fusion in 5th place in the USL League 2 Western Conference Southwest Division. Both teams are coming off losses, and both chase division leading Project 51O in the race to the playoffs. At the conclusion of the season, the leader in each division in the three-division Western Conference and the highest-finishing second place team represent the conference in the USL League 2 playoffs.

In its last match, Fusion went down 3-2 to Project 51O surrendering a 1-0 lead in the process. Having played only eight games this season, however, Fusion has two games in hand, and a potential six points, on its Oakland rival.

Striker Logan Farrington leads the Fusion in scoring with five goals, followed by Nathanial Opoko with two. The team has employed an aggressive high press, frustrating opponents when they try to build and creating an abundance of turnovers, many of which have led to goal scoring opportunities. The team is solid defensively and has little trouble creating chances, but has struggled at times putting the ball in the back of the net. Only four players beside Farrington have scored with Nathaniel Opoku the only one to score more than one. Regardless, Fusion head coach Mike Elias is confident that the scoring will come around.

“We are a good attacking team with many players who are very capable of finishing,” said Elias. “We have multiple players who are able to score given the right playing conditions. I know we could be scoring many more goals and believe it’s just a matter of time until we hit four or five goals in one game. Let’s just hope that comes sooner rather than later.”

Davis Legacy SC joined League 2 this season. Established in 1989 in Davis, California, it is the premier soccer organization for youth and adults in the City of Davis and surrounding communities and features players from surrounding colleges and universities. In addition to its League 2 team, it fields junior sides in a variety of divisions.

Derick Roque, who plays his college soccer at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA, and Titus Washington from Sacramento State lead the team with two goals apiece. Roque’s UOP teammate Cooper Riley and Robert Mejia, who is on his way to UC Irvine after three seasons at UC Davis, have also scored goals. Forward Austin Wehner, who is transferring to Sacramento State after three years at San Diego State is another goal-scorer up front.

The Fusion continues its Northern California road trip Friday, July 8 against San Francisco FC at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. The Fusion return home for its final game of the season, Friday, July 15 against FC Golden State Force.
